We put the “Native” in Native Roots because that is where this all started. John Wickman, our owner and manager, has been growing Rocky Mountain native plants for over twenty five years and believes native plants should be included in every garden in southwestern Colorado. Native plants provide color, environmental tolerance, longevity, and animal and insect habitat not found in most exotic plant species. We encourage you to explore the wonderful flora that is native to the Durango area, many of which perform quite well in a garden situation. Our staff can offer helpful advice on how to grow native plants and where to place them in your landscape; we are happy to share with you all we know about these remarkably adaptive plants.
